The Scottish Freedom Series (SFS) is the UK's Big Mountain Freeride Tour and British Freeride Championships. It comprises three separate weekend events that take place at some of Scotland's finest lift-served off-piste locations. Rankings achieved at each event allow 18+ riders to gain series points, and after the third and final event, British Freeride Champion titles are awarded to riders with the highest series points.
The series is all about FREEDOM and EXPRESSION - freedom to choose the event(s) you enter, whether you ride solo or as a team, your ride (skis or board) and most importantly how hard you want to “go at it”, and ultimately express yourself. It's as much about stoke and friendship as performance freeride competition. Come alone, or make up a team. Join in the camaraderie of the freeride comunity and soak up the spirit of a series that celebrates the freedom of the mountain.
Top riders will blow you away with their talent... the U18 young guns in our British Freeride junior training squad will also set a high bar, and for everyone else, these are just great events to be involved in with like minded inspirational people.
FOR EACH OF THE THREE EVENTS there is a month-long event window which allows us every chance to get them to run. If conditions look promising for an upcoming weekend, we'll give a 5-7 day notice of a "PROVISIONAL ON" and likely venue. We'll then confirm an "ON/OFF Decision" on a Thursday evening after 9pm, once an accurate 72hour forecast is known.
If we're "ON" - DROP EVERYTHING & COME AND RIDE!
For each Scottish Freedom Series event we will use the venue that offers the best conditions at the time. Find out more about the potential venues below...
Glencoe is birthplace of British Freeride. It has long been the home of the much heralded and respected Coe Cup - and deservedly so, as Flypaper and the East Ridge take no prisoners in hosting the biggest event in the Scottish Freeride calendar each year.
There are impressive steeps and unforgiving drops - it's pretty epic just being there for the weekend.
The Coe Cup is my highlight of the year - It's just the best. Every year it more than lives up to expectations." Katie Small - 5 times British Freeride female ski champion between 2014-2022
The infamous back corries of the NEVIS RANGE is one of the jewels in the crown of Scottish freeride locations. The competition usually takes place in area around G&T Gully depending upon conditions.
"Back Corries is a very special place - an awesome backdrop for a full-on freeride competition, offering steeps and huge drops" Dave Biggin - 4 times British Freeride male ski champion 2012-2016.
Glenshee offers our most accessible freeride competition venue - suitable for any newbie competitors with strong off-piste skills.
Here judged runs take place on the NE's facing slope to riders right of the Tiger and this 230 metre descent offers mix of cruisy terrain with a selection of modest drops, where line and fluidity will likely be your highest scoring criteria.
"This is such a long cruisy freeride face - its great to have it back in as a potential venue for the series" - Alex Fleming FAUNA SKIS
Each competition follows the internationally recognised FWT competition format whereby each rider is judged by a panel of judges on their freeriding performance over a single descent, down the designated off-piste, steep, and often rocky competition face.
Riders start their run on 50 out of a possible 100 and then have points added or subtracted based upon 5 criteria:-
LINE choice
TECHNIQUE displayed
CONTROL maintained
AIR & STYLE performed
FLUIDITY of the overall run
Riders are then ranked in their respective M/F, Ski/Snowboard category.
Read this scoring guide to learn what tricks and moves will max your run score. For even more information, watch the FWT scoring video.
Each year British Freeride recognises overall champions for each of the 18+ medal categories:
FEMALE BOARD
MALE BOARD
FEMALE SKI
MALE SKI
The overall ranking is based upon series points that are awarded to 18+ competitors for their ranking at each event:-
1st = 100 series points
2nd = 80 series points
3rd = 60 series points
and so on - see the full series points table.
After the final event, competitors with the highest accumulated series points are then crowned overall the British Freeride Champion for the year.
Results are in reverse date order with newest at the top, and go back to that first Coe Cup in 2012, when about 50 riders ventured out onto flypaper onto what seemed like the last patch of snow in Scotland. A good few of us were there and remember what an amazing and memorable day it was...
